Halloween Isn’t My Favorite Holiday...
31 Oct 2014

Quote of the day:

β€œLearn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”

-Albert Einstein

Sage Wells, age 10, said to me this morning, "Halloween isn't my favorite holiday."

"Why honey?" I asked -- curious because hey, there's a lotta candy involved.

Sage replied, "Because there really isn't any reason for it."

"What do you mean?" I wondered.

MacKinnon scores twice, Avs beat Islanders 5-0
31 Oct 2014

DENVER β€” Nathan MacKinnon finally found his shooting touch on a night when his goalie turned back everything.

Just what the frustrated MacKinnon needed. Same goes for Semyon Varlamov, a hard-luck loser in his last few starts.

MacKinnon scored his first two goals of the season, and Varlamov stopped 40 shots for his 14th NHL shutout, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-0 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Allen makes 24 saves in Blues' 2-0 win over Ducks
31 Oct 2014

ST. LOUIS β€” The short-handed St. Louis Blues took on the visiting Anaheim Ducks with a simple game plan and a lack of offensive firepower.

Jake Allen took care of the rest.

The Blues' young goalie recorded his second NHL shutout, stopping 24 shots, and Alexander Steen and Ryan Reaves provided the offense as the Blues beat the Ducks 2-0 on Thursday night for their third consecutive victory.

Clippers hold off Thunder 93-90 in opener
31 Oct 2014

LOS ANGELES β€” The Clippers didn't shoot well, couldn't build more than a 10-point lead, and still managed to usher in the Steve Ballmer era with a victory for their new owner.

Blake Griffin scored 23 points, making two free throws with five seconds left, and Chris Paul added 22 in a season-opening 93-90 win Thursday over the Oklahoma City Thunder, who lost another star to injury when Russell Westbrook broke his right hand.

"It was pretty ugly," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "We have 81 more games to fix it."

Young, Wolves hold off Pistons 97-91
31 Oct 2014

MINNEAPOLIS β€” The Minnesota Timberwolves' youth movement is in full effect, with Andrew Wiggins and Co. ushering in a new era in the wake of Kevin Love's departure.

When it came to winning time on Thursday night, however, it was all veterans on the floor. And that's what makes coach Flip Saunders believe the rebuilding effort won't be as drastic as some people expect.

Daniel Sedin's OT goal lifts Canucks over Montreal
31 Oct 2014

VANCOUVER, British Columbia β€” Daniel and Henrik Sedin weren't in top form until it mattered most.

Daniel took a delicate feed from twin brother Henrik off the rush and roofed a shot past Montreal goalie Carey Price on the power play at 2:45 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the Canadiens on Thursday night.

Daniel Sedin's third goal of the season came after the Canucks squandered a 2-0 lead in the third period. The twins were both on the ice together when Max Pacioretty's tied it with 2:33 left in regulation.

Red Bulls beat Sporting KC 2-1 to advance
31 Oct 2014

HARRISON, N.J. β€” Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice in the final 13 minutes to rally New York to a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Thursday night, eliminating the defending MLS Cup champion from the playoffs and sending the Red Bulls to the conference semifinals.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, who led the league with a record-tying 27 goals, tied it in the 77th minute and headed in the winner with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

Trooper ambush suspect caught, death penalty eyed
31 Oct 2014

LORDS VALLEY, Pa. β€” A survivalist accused of ambushing two state troopers, killing one and seriously wounding the other, was captured on Thursday by U.S. marshals near an abandoned airplane hangar, ending a seven-week manhunt that had rattled the nerves of area residents.

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Eric Frein, who meekly gave himself up when surrounded, authorities said.

"He did not just give up because he was tired," state police Commissioner Frank Noonan said. "He gave up because he was caught."
